The one moment that summed up Liverpool's deflated display vs. Atalanta

| by Michael Mongie

Liverpool were very poor against Atalanta on Thursday and fully deserved the 3-0 drubbing handed to them with one moment summing up the entire performance.

The last kick of the game was a punt from Caoimhin Kelleher straight into touch.

Even referee Halil Umut Mele seemed disappointed as he raised the whistle to his lips to signal full time and an historic win for Atalanta.

It was a display that beggared belief. The first half seemed to be an underperformance but the second half proved that it was way worse than that.

Some of the reaction online has been too much but it's easy to see why fans are so frustrated and angry with a side that did very little to be deserving of even a draw.

Liverpool will now head to Italy for the second leg and while the damage may be done, it's certainly not time to pack it in and give up hope as Jamie Carragher has suggested.

While returning injured stars will give the Reds a boost, it will take an almighty effort to stand a chance of beating Atalanta by a goal difference of 3+ next week.

They may not even be in the Serie A top four this season but the first leg proved for the doubters just how good Gian Piero Gasperini's side can be when they're in good form.

He should have no complaints after his last two performances but if Alisson Becker returns in goal for the second leg, it will not just be because he's back but Kelleher has dropped the ball.

Excuse the awful, unintended pun.
