Report: Liverpool could have £30m transfer bid accepted - details and reaction

Liverpool have set their sights on Sporting Lisbon’s Marcus Edwards, with the club potentially triggering his £30 million buyout clause this summer.

This revelation comes from senior correspondent Pete O'Rourke during the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast.

Edwards, a 25-year-old winger, has garnered significant attention after a successful stint at Sporting, where he's made over 100 appearances since leaving Tottenham Hotspur in 2019.

Despite only making a single appearance for Spurs, Edwards has flourished in Portugal, notably contributing to Sporting's bid for a league and cup double this season with six goals and eight assists.

Liverpool’s interest in Edwards is timely, given the uncertainty surrounding the future of current winger Luis Diaz, who is reportedly a target for Paris Saint-Germain.

With Jurgen Klopp’s successor yet to be confirmed, Ruben Amorim, the current manager of Sporting and the frontrunner for the Liverpool job, could influence potential transfer moves.

Amorim's connection with Edwards might smooth the transition for the young winger to Anfield, should the managerial change take place.

The inclusion of high buyout clauses is a common practice among Portuguese clubs, as noted by O'Rourke, which means Liverpool would need to meet the £30 million valuation to secure Edwards’ services.

The reporter suggests the offer would be accepted.

His versatility in playing on both wings and his experience in domestic and European competitions make him a valuable asset for the Reds looking to bolster their attacking options.

As Liverpool prepare for a potentially transformative summer, the acquisition of Marcus Edwards could signify a strategic move to refresh and revitalize the squad under new leadership.

With Amorim possibly at the helm, Edwards’ arrival could be one of the first major steps in Liverpool’s new chapter.

Why is Edwards such an exciting transfer target?

His six goals and eight assists are impressive but the'yre not the sort of numbers you'd associate with a Liverpool forward.

That said, Edwards would get way more credit if football appreciated playmakers more. His biggest strengths are in the chance creation department and one player who would love to play with him is Darwin Nunez.

The Uruguayan is a chance magnet (even if he struggles to put them away at times) but with someone like Edwards feeding him, he'd get even more chances to score.

Given the low £30M valuation, this seems just like the type of transfer new CEO of Football Michael Edwards might like to announce his return to Liverpool with.

It's a transfer that might not worry rivals too much but with enough time to develop, he could become a serious, serious player.
