Liverpool could return for Donyell Malen after they missed out on signing him in 2021 when he opted for a transfer to Borussia Dortmund.

The Dutchman scored and assisted a total of 18 goals last season and seems to be getting back to the type of form that saw clubs interested in signing him from PSV Eindhoven.

Now, Dortmund have signed Jadon Sancho on loan from Manchester United which could become a permanent return after his public spat with Erik ten Hag.

This could see Donyell Malen leave as Christian Falk suggests that it mean the 24-year-old is "sold immediately.

“Sancho’s arrival would put a lot of pressure on Donyell Malen. He could be sold immediately,” Falk wrote in his latest column for CaughtOffside.

“There was an idea of a swap deal with Manchester United for Sancho – they didn’t go for it.

“But if there is an offer coming from the Premier League for Malen, Dortmund will be open to talks.”

Liverpool aren't in desperate need of a new attacker but have been linked with a move to sign Malen multiple times over the last several months. In September 2023, the Daily Mail claimed that Jurgen Klopp was keeping an eye on a £52 million move to sign him.

It would be a total surprise to see Malen move to Anfield in January and while anything can happen in football, this is a transfer with a very low chance of happening now or in the summer.

Malen is "open to a new challenge", as per Sky Sports' Florian Plettenberg, but it's likely he will have to look elsewhere as he has probably missed his chance to move to Liverpool.
