Liverpool privately hoping Newcastle complete £40M signing in January

Liverpool will be privately hopeful that Dominic Solanke completes a move to Newcastle United this month as it will result in a windfall for the Merseysiders.

Former Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards has often been praised for his critical negotiating tactics and even after leaving the club in 2022, his talents are rewarding the Reds.

According to a report from the Telegraph, Newcastle have made an approach to Bournemouth to gather intel on what a transfer to sign Solanke would cost in the January transfer window.

His contract includes a 20% sell-on clause, as per This is Anfield, which means Liverpool have a claim on 20% of the profit Bournemouth make when selling Solanke.

If the Cherries earn £40 million from his sale, they will first have to subtract the £24 million they paid Liverpool to sign him.

20% of the remaining £16M would go to Anfield which means the Reds stand to make around £3.2M more from their decision to sell the striker. Their overall earnings from the sale would then reach £27.2M.

Edwards was the one who negotiated the inclusion of the clause and with Solanke now starring in the Premier League, Liverpool are set to reap the benefits.

The former Anfield attacker has the third-most goals (12) in the English top flight this season and is only behind Mohamed Salah and Erling Haaland, who are the joint top goal scorers with 14 strikes.
