Now that Jurgen Klopp's decision to leave Liverpool has been made public, it's obvious that most of the stories reported during the January transfer window were fictitious.

Plans to recruit new players will be on hold until a new manager is appointed although it has been reported by Fabrizio Romano that one player was considered for a move to Anfield in the days leading up to Deadline Day.

Romano reports Liverpool considered adding Oumar Solet to their squad

Reporting via his Here We Go podcast, the Italian journalist said: “Liverpool were never close to completing a signing in the January transfer window because they were really happy with the squad they have.

“They were never close to signing Andre [Trindade] or any other player despite all the rumours.

“But they were offered a nice possibility, an interesting opportunity with Oumar Solet at Salzburg as new centre-back – a player that they’ve been scouting for a long time.

"The German director at Liverpool, Schmadtke, knows the player so well so they were discussing internally the possibility for Solet. Then Liverpool decided not to sign any player.

“He was also in the list at Napoli and also at Lens, but he ended up staying at Salzburg.”

Who is Oumar Solet and why do Liverpool want him?

Who is the 23-year-old?

Playing for RB Salzburg, he has developed a reputation for being a versatile player.

He's able to play in defensive midfield as well as at centre-back which presents interesting solutions considering the new trend of playing fullbacks in midfield while in possession to create overloads in wide areas.

Technically, Solet is very capable and while he is right-footed, he's quite comfortable on his weaker left foot. That said, he is better when played as a right-sided centre-back unlike Virgil van Dijk.

Why did Liverpool consider signing him?

Despite the rise of Jarell Quansah to prominence, Liverpool are still exposed somewhat in the centre-back department and could have done with signing a new centre-back last month.

Joel Matip's ACL tear has placed Klopp in a tricky situation but he seems happy to keep faith with the options he has but it could also be a decision from the club not to sign any players until the managerial future of the club is decided.
