Liverpool have learned how much it will cost to sign James Maddison in the summer if he continues to reject Leicester City's attempts to renew his contract.

The English midfielder's contract will expire in 2024 and despite Leicester making him captain to persuade him to stay at the club, he continues to reject all advances from the Foxes' hierarchy.

Maddison is one of many Liverpool targets whose terms are winding down amid interest from the Reds and he'd certainly be a player that fans would enjoy watching.

According to Football Insider, Liverpool will need to pay £60m-£70m to sign Maddison this summer.

FSG will need to contend with interest from other clubs as Newcastle United and Tottenham have reportedly made the 26-year-old their top target.

Man City have also been linked but nothing concrete has emerged yet.

Liverpool's midfield is lacking a player like Maddison, who is a double threat. He can score and assist with equal efficiency and would give Jurgen Klopp a different attacking threat than what he currently has on offer.

In the last few seasons, Maddison has put up some staggering numbers despite playing in a Leicester side that has consistently failed to reach their full potential.

Last season was the best of his career to date, scoring 18 and assisting 12 while this season, he already has 9 goals and 5 assists.

Given the lack of a playmaker in Liverpool's traditional midfield three, it's difficult to predict how Klopp would use Maddison.

But if the 7-0 win over Manchester United is anything to go by, he could play in a similar role to the one that Harvey Elliott wreaked havoc in.

Links to Mason Mount have come thick and fast recently and with both players similar in a number of ways, it's interesting to consider that Klopp feels he needs more creativity and output from his midfield.

Given that all of Liverpool's midfielders have combined a total of five goals this season, the manager may be looking to shake up his squad and approach to games.
