Pep Guardiola could break £42 million transfer promise to Liverpool

Liverpool want to sign Kalvin Phillips in January but Pep Guardiola may go against his word and prevent the Englishman from completing a move to Anfield.

The winter transfer window opens at the start of January and Jurgen Klopp is in need of a new defensive midfielder.

Whether or not he makes use of the opportunity to reinforce his side remains to be seen but it seems likely that he won't be moving to Liverpool.

He's admired at Anfield but Man City could block a move, according to reports.

Pep Guardiola says he would sell to Liverpool during press conference

Speaking ahead of Manchester City's 4-4 draw with Chelsea, Pep Guardiola told the gathered reporters he has no problem selling his players to rival teams.

He said: “If they want to go to Chelsea or [Manchester] United or, I don’t know, Liverpool, whatever, what is the problem? They are happy to be there and the club is happy with the transfer.

“The other club is happy with the amount of money they spend, so it is fine. Another player will come to us and we keep going in a good spirit and a good mood.”

After Cole Palmer and Raheem Sterling scored important goals to take two points away from Man City in the game immediate prior to Liverpool's trip to the Etihad, perhaps Guardiola has changed his mind.

New report suggest Guardiola has changed his mind on Kalvin Phillips

An exclusive from Football Insider claims that while Phillips will likely be sold in January, he likely won't join Liverpool.

The report says Liverpool are "eyeing a potential January move for Kalvin Phillips" while West Ham and Newcastle United have joined the race for the former Leeds United star.

Juventus are also interested but FI state that the player wants to remain in the Premier League even though "he hasn’t ruled out a move abroad".

The most important line of the report for Liverpool fan reads: "And while Man City won’t stand in the 27-year-old’s way in January, it is believed they could block him from joining the Merseysiders."

Liverpool and Man City seem destined for another classic Premier League title race this season which will come to a head on Saturday. The Reds travel to the Etihad just one point behind Guardiola's side.

Whichever side wins will have a huge confidence boost going into the congested festive fixture list.
