Liverpool join Newcastle United in race to sign €50 million midfielder

Liverpool have moved to sign Kalvin Phillips as the January transfer window approaches but face competition from Juventus and Newcastle United.

The Englishman scored a penalty for Manchester City in the 3-2 win over Crvena zvezda which ultimately proved to be the winner.

His future at the Etihad remains in doubt with a transfer in January on the cards.

Ahead of Euro 2024, Phillips needs regular game time to argue his case for inclusion to England manager Gareth Southgate.

The 305 minutes he has played this season won't be enough to book his place in the squad and so a loan spell in Italy could be on the cards for the remainder of the season, reports Calciomercato.

Juventus rates the 28-year-old highly and would be happy to take him on loan for the remainder of the season with the view to pay between €40 million and €50 million to sign him permanently in the summer.

Pep Guardiola recently claimed he doesn't have an issue with selling his players to Premier League rivals but reportedly, City would prefer to sell him abroad where they won't be directly impacted by his expected return to prominence.

This could be an issue for Newcastle United and Liverpool. The Magpies have "solid" interest but it's the Reds that have upped the ante.

At the time of writing, they had reportedly joined the race "in the last few hours".
