Liverpool are monitoring a move to sign Juventus midfielder Manuel Locatelli as they seek to overhaul their struggling midfield.

The 2022/23 season has been one to forget for Liverpool so far. There is still time to complete an unexpected comeback to the Premier League top four but it's going to require continued improvement.

The 2-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers means that Liverpool haven't conceded a goal in their last three league matches.

Midfield remains Liverpool's biggest area of weakness within the squad and a report states that the Reds are investigating a move to bring Manuel Locatelli to Anfield next season.

With Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James all in the final months of their contracts, could Locatelli be one of the midfielders Liverpool sign in the summer?

Overview of Liverpool's interest in Juventus Midfielder Manuel Locatelli

Liverpool are reportedly keeping a keen eye on Manuel Locatelli. The 1.85m midfielder has appeared for a total of 1,588 minutes in the Serie A.

Across the board, his stats read as follows:

Competition Games Minutes Goals Assists
Serie A 20 1,588' 0 5
Champions League 5 265' 0 1
Europa League 2 117' 0 0
Italy Cup 2 120' 0 0

The 25-year-old is a fantastic player and is very good technically but he doesn't suit Liverpool's style of play.

He's neither dynamic or aggressive enough to excel in Klopp's midfield as a starter.

Reports from CalcioMercatoWeb state that Liverpool would only need to pay around £31million in order to acquire his services. Nothing concrete has developed in this story and for now, he is just a player under consideration.

This season has exposed Liverpool's need to invest heavily in the summer especially with Keita, Chamberlain and Milner all expected to leave upon the expiry of their respective contracts in June.

Who should Liverpool sign instead of Manuel Locatelli?

The obvious and correct answer is Jude Bellingham. He has been linked with a move to Anfield for a few years now and it seems probable this summer.

A recent report claimed that the teenager could remain at Borussia Dortmund for another year a bit like Erling Haaland. Liverpool, however, have backed themselves into a corner in which it will look like a failure if they don't sign Bellingham.

Signing only Bellingham in the summer won't be sufficient either as there is a lack of quality right across the midfield options in Liverpool's squad right now.

In addition to Bellingham, Mount is also a target and the Reds are reportedly leading the race to sign him from Chelsea. The Englishman would be a brilliant player under Klopp, with his counter-attacking instincts likely to give the Reds a new edge in attack.

It's unclear how this transfer saga might stick or twist but his wage demands are the most obvious hurdle to clear, with the midfielder demanding £240,000 per week from Chelsea to extend his contract.

His terms are currently set to expire in June 2024. Liverpool can use both Mount's contract winding down and Chelsea's controversial spending to their advantage as they look to bring him to Anfield this summer.
