Latest update on Liverpool's reported €92 million plans to sign 20-year-old

In a Q&A with Liverpool supporters, the Daily Mail's Merseyside reporter Lewis Steele provided an update on interest in Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz.

Recently, the 20-year-old has been heavily linked with Liverpool but a move to sign him is not imminent.

There were rumours that the Reds were planning a monstrous bid worth a reported €92 million (£80m) but they were swiftly put to bed by Simon Rolfes, Leverkusen's managing director of sport.

He said: “No, no one has approached us, and no one needs that.”

Fabrizio Romano then reported that Liverpool (and other clubs) will not be signing Wirtz in the January transfer window before SPORT reported on Barcelona's "close" monitoring of the young star.

Now speaking during a Q&A with Liverpool fans about a range of topics, Lewis Steele suggests that the Reds are likely to be looking at Wirtz but without any "concrete" plans to make a move.

Steele told fans: “There’s no concrete interest yet in Florian Wirtz but that doesn’t mean he is not on Liverpool’s radar. They look at a lot of players.

“Reports in Germany suggest this one is a lot more advanced than it is. He’s a great player and his statistics are excellent, with Xabi Alonso helping find a new level to his game.

“It’s one to watch in the future but nothing happening yet.”

It's understandable why Liverpool would be so interested in Wirtz given the form he has been in.

Last season, he was already hugely impressive and managed 12 goals and assists in 1,815 minutes of football for Leverkusen.

The 20-year-old has already beaten that total this season with six goals and 10 assists from just 1,173 minutes across 17 appearances.

It's safe to say he's already one of the best players in the Bundesliga and while he may not be joining Liverpool any time soon, they will definitely be keeping a close eye on him.
