Every important Kylian Mbappe to Liverpool transfer story since 2017

The most exciting transfer story Liverpool fans have been teased has to be the idea of Kylian Mbappe moving to Anfield. Signing the French superstar has often been touted as unrealistic due to the astounding finances involved but it's a transfer the Reds have seriously considered over the years.

The former AS Monaco wonderkid needs no introduction. He has scored over 230 goals for Paris Saint-Germain and won the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, leading many to believe he is the most talented footballer on the planet.

His next career move is being closely watched by fans all over the world.

Real Madrid seem to be the most likely to sign him due to their incredible wealth but Liverpool could shock the footballing world by pulling off an audacious move to sign the striker on a free in the coming summer transfer window.

A lot has been written about Liverpool signing Mbappe - too much to put in a single blog post.

However, it's no secret that the Reds have wanted to bring him to Merseyside but have never been able to compete with the finances that PSG and Real Madrid have.

However, with his contract in Paris set to expire in June 2024, Liverpool have a rare opportunity to sign him.

Without further ado, here are the 10 most important transfer stories that have been published about Liverpool's hopes of signing Kylian Mbappe.

1. Liverpool owners took Mbappe and his family on a private jet over Monaco to discuss a transfer

In 2017, Liverpool's principle owner, John W. Henry, took Mbappe and his family on a private jet.

The airplane flew over the scenic landscape of Monaco while the American businessman attempted to sell the idea of moving to Anfield.

It obviously didn't work as it was soon revealed that he would be heading to Paris on loan for a year before PSG paid AS Monaco a mind-boggling £166 million to make it a permanent transfer.

2. His mother is a huge fan of Liverpool

This could be particularly impactful if it comes down to choosing between Liverpool and Real Madrid.

Mbappe revealed that his mother is a Red: “I talked to Liverpool because it’s the favourite club of my mum, my mum loves Liverpool…

"I don’t know why, you will have to ask her!

“It’s a good club and we met them five years ago. When I was in Monaco I met them. It’s a big club”.

3.. Kylian Mbappe signs record-breaking PSG contract worth £1.2M per week!

Now, this isn't really an 'Mbappe to Liverpool' story but it's crucial in the context of his career.

The news of what PSG agreed to paid him broke the internet.

Let's put into context how much money that is:

  • That's £5 million every month
  • That's £62.4 million per year
  • 3.4 times more than what Salah earns at Liverpool
  • £62.4M per year would buy you roughly 83,000 season tickets at Liverpool. The Reds only offer 27,000 season tickets per season so it would be enough to pay for the club's loyal fans to see them free for three years straight
  • That's enough money to buy Liverpool's 2023/24 adult kit 832,000 times

Yeah, that's a lot of money.

In other words, it's difficult to see how Liverpool can afford to pay him these figures on a hypothetical five year contract.

FSG would need to offer him a contract worth £300 million!

It's the type of move that would genuinely shock the world but it just seems a bit fanciful even though journalists keep linking the Reds with a move, sowing the groundwork for six months of Kylian Mbappe transfer stories.

4. Mbappe used to the Sturridge dance to celebrate goals as a kid

The former Liverpool forward once revealed that Mbappe's mom told him that as as child, he used to copy Sturridge's dance when he scored a goal.

I think a lot of us has done the dance at some point.

I know I used to.

5. Jurgen Klopp appears to have a good relationship with Mbappe's dad

Klopp's ability to strike a rapport with almost anyone he meets is such a huge strength.

While Real Madrid would be an incredible place to take his talents, there are few clubs with as strong a family culture as Liverpool and for a 25-year-old looking to reach even greater heights, this is key.

Salah's explosion in the last seven years is evidence of this.

6. Mbappe confirmed he was in talks with Liverpool

In May 2022, Mbappe told the Telegraph that he had been in talks with Liverpool.

He said: "It was not just Real Madrid and PSG. I was in talks to join Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool."

This is arguably the most important thing that has ever happened for Liverpool in connection with Mbappe.

Those talks didn't result in a move to the Premier League but who's to say the fleet-footed forward is not in talks with the Reds again ahead of the end of his PSG contract.

7. Mbappe described Liverpool's Premier League title-winning side as a "machine"

"What Liverpool do in this moment is amazing," Mbappe said in January 2020. "They're like a machine, they've found a rhythm and are like 'we play again, we play again'.

"They've lost zero games. When you watch you think everything's easy but that's not easy. The guys are focused, they play games every three days and they win, they win, they win.

"Now the problem is that everybody watches Liverpool, and everybody watches what we can do against them, so now they have to show they are strong again but it's a very good team with a very good manager."

8. Julien Laurens says Mbappe likes Liverpool

Laurens is a close friend of the forward's and he said: : “I really believe him when he says he hasn’t decided yet.

“If he wants to stay a little bit longer or go somewhere else in the summer else as a free agent, Madrid very likely, Liverpool, less likely but, that’s another team he really, really likes.

“Even if he leaves as a free agent, so with no transfer fee for PSG to receive, the agreement that he has with the club protects PSG and preserves the interest of the club.

“The bonus that PSG were supposed to pay him at the end of the season whether he was leaving or not will not be paid.”

9. David Ornstein said only Real Madrid could "possibly afford to pay Kylian Mbappe's wages

While speaking on Rio Ferdinand's FIVE podcast, reputed journalist David Ornstein said that only PSG, and "possibly" Real Madrid, can afford the reported £1.2M/week wages the 25-year-old earns in Paris.

“What Kylian Mbappe earns possibly can only really be paid at PSG, possibly Real Madrid,” Ornstein began.

“We see Liverpool linked with him, I don’t know the credibility of those suggestions.

“If this guy’s available everybody’s going to have interest in him but again it doesn’t translate into a signing. PSG are really relaxed about the situation from what I know. If he wants to continue with them and he wants to re-sign then they’ll do it gladly.”

10. Mbappe "really, really likes" Liverpool amid speculation of free transfer to Anfield

Most recently, talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook has reported that the forward is a huge fan of the club but despite that, it's difficult to see him going anywhere else except Real Madrid.

“I’d be surprised if he ends up anywhere else apart from the Bernabeu,” he said.

“He has come out over the last 24 hours, Mbappe, and said even if he wants to leave when his contract expires at the end of the season, he has an agreement in place with PSG to make sure they’re financially recompensated. I think he’s going to go to Real Madrid, it’s the worst kept secret in football.

“The Liverpool link comes up time and time again, but he’s on huge wages, even by Premier League standards it would smash Liverpool’s pay structure. So, as much as I’d love to see Mbappe in the Premier League, Real Madrid is going to be where he ends up.”

Verdict

It's still incredibly unlikely Mbappe moves to Liverpool but there is no denying that Liverpool are interested and that the thought of a move to Anfield intrigues him.

If he joined Liverpool (and that's a very big if) it would be the most spectacular signing any supporter has dreamt the Reds could pull off.

With Jurgen Klopp at the helm, Liverpool would be well on their way to making history.
