Liverpool could repeat transfer hijack as Spurs get set to sign defensive midfield target

Liverpool are known to be wizards in the transfer market even since the departure of Michael Edwards in the sporting director role.

Jurgen Klopp's coaching and peerless man-management is no doubt an enormous factor but the Reds' recruitment staff rarely get anything wrong.

In fact, they're so good at it that they manage to compete at the top end of the game while making a profit on transfers. Simply next level.

They've also made enemies (not real ones) along the way and they could do so again if they decide to make a move to sign Genoa midfielder Morten Frendrup as speculated.

Overview of Luis Diaz transfer hijack in 2022

In the January transfer window of 2022, Liverpool signed one of the most exciting players on the market in Luis Diaz.

The Colombian is a sensational dribbler and is once again getting involved in the goals after struggling for consistency since his knee injury against Arsenal in October of the same year.

But the story of how he ended up at Anfield makes his signing even better.

For those who don't know (if you do, skip ahead to how this involves Morten Frendrup), Liverpool made the hierarchy at Tottenham very angry with how they signed Diaz.

For a long time, the Reds kept an eye on his progress dating back to when he played for Atlético Junior in his homeland.

However highly they rated him, however, Liverpool waited for the opportune moment to strike.

When was that moment?

As soon as Spurs decided to formalise their interest with an approach to Porto requesting permission to speak to the winger about a move to London.

Liverpool wasted no time and swooped in with their own approach and offer before signing him a couple days later for a figure that could rise to £49 million depending on bonuses.

This infuriated Spurs. Specifically, chairman Daniel Levy was said to be "fuming" after Diaz chose to move to Liverpool.

Okay, so now you know that, how does this relate to defensive midfield target Morten Frendrup?

Would Morten Frendrup hesitate to choose Liverpool over Spurs?

I don't think so.

Holistically, Liverpool is the better football club.

They have way more trophies, a more historic stadium, the better coach and I could go on.

Then there's the small matter of Morten Frendrup being a self-confessed Liverpool supporter, stating in 2018: “It’s a dream I’ve always had, and I believe it will succeed. If I work hard, I believe in it.”

A report from Give Me Sport claims that Spurs want to follow their move to sign Radu Dragusin from Genoa for £25 million (€30M) with a move for the Italian club's defensive midfielder.

If Liverpool are seriously interested, they could repeat their Luis Diaz hijack with a move to gazump Spurs' plans to sign the 22-year-old.

Liverpool ECHO correspondent Paul Gorst recently confirmed the club's interest in Frendrup but did admit that there is no way to tell if he's a serious target or simply one name on a long spreadsheet of targets in the no.6 department.

If they do decide to sign the Danish international, it would generate even more fume from the higher-ups at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Bring it on.
