Twitter Community Notes Slams Brighton Protests After Major Liverpool Decision

Liverpool fans had their hearts in their mouths on Sunday afternoon when the ball struck Virgil van Dijk's hand in the penalty area. A penalty was not awarded and despite some speculation and outrage, it was the right call from referee Anthony Taylor.

Had a penalty been awarded, it would have been extremely harsh after the ball hit the defender's thigh before hitting his band split seconds later.

Under the current handball legislation, this does not warrant a spot kick,

There has also been outrage from Liverpool quarters about VAR's failure to instruct Taylor to issue a red card to Pascal Groß for his challenge on Dominik Szoboszlai, however.

Despite some truly astonishing attacking moves, Brighton continued their impressive start to the Premier League season, holding Jurgen Klopp's side to a 2-2 draw at the AMEX Stadium.

The Seagulls may have parted ways with Moises Caicedo and Alexis Mac Allister but they're just one point behind the Reds while Chelsea trail Roberto De Zerbi's men by five points.

Sky Sports' attempts to stoke potential fume over van Dijk's handball failed, with social media to the rescue for a change.

On Twitter (still not calling it X), Sky posted a video of De Zerbi raging on the sideline after a penalty wasn't awarded.

They followed this with a still frame of the ball striking van Dijk's hand. Of course, the image doesn't paint the full picture. The ball struck van Dijk's hand after hitting his le which is not a penalty under the current hand ball legislation.

This isn't the first time Liverpool have been embroiled in VAR controversy this season. Although you can hardly call the van Dijk decision controversial.

Klopp's side has had four dubious red cards. Even the Curtis Jones one - the most worth of the lot - was shrouded in further doubt after Mateo Kovacic wasn't sent off for a worse challenge on Martin Odegaard during Manchester City's 1-0 defeat to Arsenal on Sunday afternoon.

The result went in Liverpool's favour as they remain within reaching distance of the top three sides in the Premier League table.

The Reds remain fourth going into the second international break of the fledgling season.

Klopp will be hoping to see Thiago Alcantara return to action after the break with the Spaniard yet to make an appearance this season.

Many regard the gifted midfielder as a luxury player given his unfortunate injury record but if he can return to action for Klopp, it will allow Liverpool to kick into an even higher gear.
