Liverpool remain top of the Premier League table despite defeat

Liverpool remain top of the Premier League after defeat to Arsenal but they will be under a lot more pressure to churn out results now.

The Reds have 51 points and Arsenal are now on 49 while Manchester City, who have 46 points, also have two games in hand.

This means Pep Guardiola's men can leapfrog both Liverpool and Arsenal and go top of the table on goal difference if they win both games in hand.

The title race is beginning to heat up although it's too early to begin talking about goal difference. That said, it could be a factor come the end of the season given not a lot separates the three title contenders.

Liverpool have done well to come through this difficult period in the fixture list with as many points as they have without Mohamed Salah and Wataru Endo.

Jurgen Klopp will be very grateful to have both players back in his side just as he was happy to see Thiago Alcantara return to the Liverpool squad for the first time since undergoing surgery on a hip problem in May 2023.

Liverpool are in need of the experienced midfielder's quality to overcome the challenges ahead. Hopefully his body can withstand the intensity as the next four months are hugely important for the Reds.
