Where is Joe Gomez and what’s happening with his Liverpool future?

While Liverpool did sign Federico Chiesa to the delight of supporters globally, there is a lot of confusion surrounding Joe Gomez and his role under new manager Arne Slot.

The Dutch coach arrived in the summer to replace Jurgen Klopp and all things told, he’s doing a brilliant job. After three Premier League games, his side has yet to concede a goal while simultaneously playing champagne football.

Just ask Manchester United.

However, one player yet to make the starting lineup this season is Gomez. Until the transfer window slammed shut, he seemed likely to be leaving the club but is now set to stay until the January transfer window at least.

What is happening with Joe Gomez’s future at Liverpool?

Despite rumours linking him with a move away from Anfield,  the transfer window came to a close on Saturday without any acceptable offers for Gomez.

He will remain at the club this season and it’s a good thing too. Liverpool didn’t sign anyone to replace Joel Matip trusting that Jarell Quansah can continue in the rich vein of form he ended last season. The 21-year-old is ostensibly the Matip replacement as he was last season after the Cameroonian suffered an awful ACL rupture.

Gomez, however, has fallen way down the pecking order and appears to now be in a position where he has to fight to prove his worth to Slot.

So, what now for Gomez?

The path forward for Gomez is pretty simple but it will depend on what he, the club and the manager want.

If he wants to stay, he’s going to have to show Slot what he’s made of but more importantly, he has to avoid injury to be considered for a permanent starting position.

If he wants to leave, he will have that opportunity again in January but until then, Liverpool need to make use of his talents.

Injury-prone or not, coming or going, one thing is clear: Gomez is a top defender and it’s better that he is still a Liverpool player.
