Van Dijk tells Nunez what he needs to focus on after Bournemouth goal

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has called on Darwin Nunez to remain composed after the striker ended his long goal drought.

Nunez scored his first goal in 15 matches during Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Bournemouth, a goal that visibly moved him.

The 25-year-old appeared emotional after finding the back of the net, perhaps signalling a turning point in his Anfield career.

Nunez is hoping to make a fresh start under new head coach Arne Slot after struggling to secure regular playing time in the final months of Jurgen Klopp’s tenure.

The pressure had been mounting on the Uruguayan forward, particularly given the high expectations following his big-money move to Liverpool.

Van Dijk’s advice: Focus on consistency

Virgil van Dijk, addressing the situation, urged Nunez to stay grounded and not get swept up in either the highs or lows that come with football.

“For him, coming into a club like Liverpool with the price tag, there is always going to be pressure to produce week in, week out, and he is trying to do that, but it is not always that easy,” said van Dijk.

Van Dijk added that Nunez needs to stay calm and keep focusing on improving. The Liverpool captain praised the way Nunez has handled the situation so far, noting the influence of manager Arne Slot in helping him grow.

“He started against Bournemouth but might not start the next game,” van Dijk continued. “We want him to be consistent, whether he’s starting or coming off the bench. Consistency is key. He shouldn’t get carried away, but I believe he’s doing well.”

A new chapter under Arne Slot

The forward, who had removed all Liverpool-related photos from his social media accounts earlier this year, admitted that criticism of his performances had affected him. With renewed confidence and the support of both his teammates and Slot, Nunez will be looking to re-establish himself in Liverpool’s attack.

Slot has emphasised the need for Nunez to develop the defensive side of his game, making him a more complete player. This is something that van Dijk believes is beginning to show.

“He worked very hard for that goal, but he also worked defensively, and that’s what we need from everyone on the team,” van Dijk said. “The fans love him for his work-rate and directness, and he got rewarded with a great goal. Now it’s about doing it consistently.”

With Liverpool sitting second in the Premier League after five games, Nunez’s continued development could be crucial as the Reds aim to challenge for titles under Slot’s leadership.
