Gary Neville has once again written off Liverpool’s Premier League title chances this season, despite their impressive start to the campaign under new manager Arne Slot.
The Reds returned to winning form with a 3-0 victory over Bournemouth on Saturday, moving temporarily to the top of the table, only to be overtaken by Manchester City following their 2-2 draw with Arsenal on Sunday.
Even with Liverpool sitting just one point behind City and ahead of Arsenal in the standings, Neville remains sceptical of their title credentials.
Speaking on the Gary Neville Podcast alongside Jamie Carragher, the former Manchester United captain was quick to shut down any talk of Liverpool being genuine title contenders.
When asked about Liverpool’s chances, Neville interjected before Carragher could respond, bluntly stating, “They won’t win the title.”
This isn’t the first time Neville has cast doubt over Liverpool’s prospects this season. Even before the campaign kicked off, he predicted that not only would the Reds fail to challenge for the Premier League crown, but they wouldn’t even finish in the top six.
On the Stick to Football podcast, Neville expressed his doubts about Slot’s side: “We have to go Arsenal and Manchester City because we all collectively agree,” Neville said. “I do [agree about Manchester United getting in the top four]. I am not sure [on Liverpool getting top four].”

Carragher, who remains optimistic about Liverpool’s chances, questioned Neville’s assessment: “Do you think Manchester United will get in, but Liverpool won’t?” Neville responded with a hesitant “maybe,” prompting Carragher to joke, “You say this every season without fail. Bookmark this.”
Neville conceded that he’s often been wrong in the past, acknowledging, “Every season, yeah. I am quite often wrong as well. It gets played back during the season, it’s quite enjoyable – I am going to go Tottenham – the surprise of the season, it can be anything. Surprise: Liverpool don’t finish in the top six.”
Liverpool’s strong start under Slot
While Neville may be quick to dismiss Liverpool’s chances, Slot’s side have shown encouraging signs early on.
The Reds currently sit second in the table, just a point behind City, and have looked formidable in attack with players like Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez leading the charge.
Their 3-0 victory over Bournemouth was a statement performance, reinforcing the idea that Liverpool are capable of challenging the reigning champions.

The 2-2 draw between City and Arsenal also played into Liverpool’s hands, with both of last season’s top two dropping points.
With just five games played, Liverpool have positioned themselves as early contenders, but there is still a long way to go in a season that promises plenty of twists and turns.
Will Neville be proven wrong again?
As Neville’s past predictions have shown, it’s often risky to completely write off Liverpool, a club with a track record of proving doubters wrong.
While his scepticism may be rooted in bias, Liverpool’s start to the season suggests they could yet mount a serious challenge for the Premier League title.
With players like Mohamed Salah, Dominik Szoboszlai, and new signing Ryan Gravenberch settling in well, the Reds have a squad capable of competing at the top.
Whether Neville’s comments will come back to haunt him once again remains to be seen, but Liverpool fans will undoubtedly be hoping that their strong start continues and that they can defy the critics on their way to challenging for silverware this season.
