The Trent Alexander-Arnold contract situation has been the topic of discussion on Merseyside for months. There is a real fear amongst Liverpool fans that the boyhood red will leave to join Real Madrid on a free transfer at the end of the season.
Liverpool are worried about losing the 26-year-old defender who has emerged as Real Madrid’s top right-back target for the next summer transfer window.
He wants to win the Ballon d’Or and Real Madrid are prepared to offer him the platform to do so alongside the glitz and glamour of being a player wearing that famous white shirt in the Spanish capital.
The Spanish giants have offered him a mega-deal and will make an official contract offer in January when, as things stand, Alexander-Arnold will be free to discuss a transfer with clubs outside England.
More and more voices are coming out with the suggestion that his move to Real Madrid next summer is almost an inevitability but not everyone is buying into that narrative.
Trent Alexander-Arnold tipped to stay put at Anfield
There has been a sense of impending doom about the defender moving to Real Madrid next summer with suggestions that Alexander-Arnold is not sure about Liverpool’s ambition going forward.
He has neither won the Premier League nor the Champions League since turning 22 and he wants to win those trophies to get his name into the Ballon d’Or race.
Stephen Warnock conceded that Liverpool fans are worried about losing the defender but he is confident that Alexander-Arnold will eventually stay.
Can you name the team Liverpool sold these players to?
He insisted that the right-back is a future captain at Anfield and feels that for a boyhood Liverpool fan, it would be massive for him to lead the club and lift trophies for them.
“There is a lot of worry on Merseyside that Trent Alexander-Arnold may be the one to leave, but I think he will stay,” Warnock said on BBC Radio 5 Live.
“There have been discussions about him wanting to be Liverpool captain in the future and for a boyhood fan that means a lot.
“He will be wanting to lift a Premier League, Champions League, a cup, lots of trophies as Liverpool captain.”
Alexander-Arnold is prepared to drag the negotiations over a new deal into 2025, which Liverpool have been keen to avoid.
