In another world, Evan Ferguson may have joined Liverpool instead of Brighton and Hove Albion.

The 18-year-old has blown Premier League fans away with his clinical finishing for the Seagulls this season and is already emerging as a dark horse in the race for the Golden Boot.

Erling Haaland, last season's most prolific forward, already has six goals in four games for Manchester City. The Norwegian is making up for the absence of the injured Kevin De Bruyne with his side top of the table with 12 points.

Ferguson has played fewer minutes (206) compared to Haaland (350) and so his four goals in four games this season is very impressive.

His hattrick against Newcastle United right before the international break took him within two goals of Haaland.

Why did Ferguson reject Liverpool for Brighton?

The exciting forward may well have ended up at Anfield but Ferguson has explained the logic behind choosing Brighton over Liverpool.

The striker moved to the south of England in January 2021 from Bohemians of Ireland and while he had a trial with the Reds, he snubbed the opportunity to join them.

In an interview with the Athletic in 2022, Ferguson noted he didn't want to follow the footsteps of other young hopefuls that battle to stand out at a massive club like Liverpool.

He said: "I went to Liverpool a few times. It’s a good club, but you see so many boys at Liverpool just fading away and there’s no chance to get in the first team."

Speaking to Sussex Live, the young forward revealed why Brighton then was a better option for him, saying : "I think I always knew them (Brighton). As soon as they were in the Premier League (in 2017) you could see them and you could see what they were trying to do.

“When I came over they were definitely the team I wanted to join. I used to come over to all the clubs with my dad. He had a clue about what was going on so I think he was key."

Missing out on a huge talent like Ferguson may sting the Liverpool recruitment department but you can't get them all.

Not to mention that Jurgen Klopp already has a glittering array of attacking talent at Anfield and Ferguson would likely still battle to force his way into the German's starting XI.

Do Liverpool have the strongest attacking options?

While Liverpool only recently rebuilt their midfield, it was clear at the end of last season that it would not be necessary to add any more attackers to the squad.

From Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz on the flanks to any one of Cody Gakpo, Darwin Nunez or Diogo Jota at striker, Klopp has a plethora of elite attackers at his disposal.

So far this season, they have scored seven goals between them but beyond the numbers, the fluidity of play has been exactly what was missing last season.
