Liverpool are in talks to sign Bayern Munich defender Benjamin Pavard and will have a unique opportunity to scout him and continue talks in person.

The Reds have travelled to Germany for their pre-season training camp before they will travel to Singapore for their tour of Asia before returning to the UK to complete preparations ahead of the new season.

In Asia, Liverpool will play friendlies against Leicester City and Bayern Munich. While they're travelling across the globe to continue increasing fitness ahead of the new campaign, it could present an opportunity to make progress on signing Pavard.

Christian Falk reported earlier this week that the French World Cup winner is the subject of interest from Chelsea and Barcelona although the latter will struggle to sign him due to financial constraints.

The 27-year-old is heading into the final year of his €96,000/week contract at the Allianz Arena and this means Liverpool will be able to sign him at a discount should Bayern show a willingness to sell.

Jurgen Klopp performed a similar coup with the deal to take Thiago Alcantara to Merseyside in 2020, signing the Spaniard a year before his contract was due to expire.

Liverpool face Bayern in the Singapore Festival of Football on August 2.

Why does Jurgen Klopp want to sign a new centre-back?

The German manager has Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez as his first four options at the centre of defence.

So why does he want a new central defender? Well, given that all four have had their issues with injuries in recent seasons, it's wise to plan for the eventuality where one or more of them are ruled out.

More excitingly, signing Pavard allows Klopp to move Trent into midfield by starting the French defender at right-back or by playing him at right centre-back and then switching to a 3-2-2-3 in-game to maximise ball progression lanes.

Trent showcased his natural suitability to a midfield role at the tail end of last season and it's prudent to expect him to feature in this role in some capacity this season.
