Liverpool have been in direct contact since January to sign midfielder that wants over £200,000/week

Liverpool Football Club have been in direct contact with Mason Mount's representatives since January 2023, according to sources.

The Reds are reportedly interested in acquiring the services of the 23-year-old English international.

So far in this turbulent season for Chelsea, Mount has managed three goals and six assists. It's a low tally for a player of his calibre but he hasn't had the consistency needed to thrive.

Mount, who has been with Chelsea since his early childhood, has emerged as one of the brightest prospects in the Premier League in recent years.

With his contract expiring in June 2024, Mount and Chelsea have reached a critical crossroads. Talks over a new deal have stalled and Liverpool are poised to pounce.

Jacque Talbot reports that Jurgen Klopp is a keen admirer of the attacking midfielder. Liverpool lack a player of his abilities and could do with someone to unlock opposition defences from central areas.

Mount's versatility, technical ability, and work rate make him an ideal fit for Liverpool's high-pressing system.

While it is unclear whether Chelsea would be willing to sell their prized asset, the interest from Liverpool could lead to a potential transfer battle in the summer.

Mount's representatives have reportedly held talks with other top Premier League clubs as well, but it remains to be seen where he will end up.

The midfielder is demanding to be paid in line with Chelsea's highest earners.

Below is a table of his wage compared to the top five highest paid Chelsea players.

Earning rank Player name Wage per week Annual salary
1 Raheem Sterling £350,000 £18,200,000
2 Kalidou Koulibaly £300,000 £15,600,000
3 N'Golo Kanté £290,000 £15,080,000
4 Reece James £250,000 £13,000,000
5 Wesley Fofana £230,000 £11,960,000
24 Mason Mount £76,000 £3,952,000

Based on stats taken from SalarySport, Mount ranks 24th on Chelsea's wage bill and would require an increase of 202% to match Wesley Fofana in 5th place.

While Liverpool are in contact with Mount and his camp, it's unlikely that Klopp or FSG will want to immediately pay the English midfielder the same as Thiago, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah.

The Reds trio are the only players at the club earning more than £200,000/week. With Mount wanting that sort of remuneration for his next contract, it could be an issue, especially with the club's future shrouded in doubt amid takeover talk.

That said, Mount would be a brilliant signing for Liverpool. If signing the 24-year-old is in addition to signing Jude Bellingham, it could Klopp's midfield to another level next season.
