Liverpool embarrassed Chelsea with “fantastic” £35M transfer

Jurgen Klopp is emulating former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson in the way he is operating his transfer department.

Since joining Liverpool in 2015, the German coach has had a near-flawless transfer record with regards to incomings and outgoings.

The summer midfield rebuild, which saw Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Ryan Gravenberch join, has been a complete success so far.

As a result, Liverpool sit top of the Premier League table. At this stage last season, the Reds were seventh with no realistic way of challenging for the title.

Not only have the four transfers hit the ground running, it has made a mockery of Chelsea's summer splurge which saw them win the race to sign Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo.

Now, speaking on Klopp's transfer track record, former Liverpool winger John Barnes says the boss has got it exactly right.

“I think you’ve got to give credit to Jurgen Klopp," Barnes said.

“He recognised there was an issue in the midfield and he’s brought in some really good players in Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister, then also integrated Curtis Jones back in there.

“He’s recognised the weakness in his team and he’s gone out and done something about it. Sir Alex Ferguson was really good at transitioning his team – bringing out three or four players and replacing them well – and I think that’s exactly what Klopp is doing now.

“I think Mac Allister at £35m is a fantastic buy, especially when you look at Chelsea who have spent £100m on both Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo – there’s probably not much between those three as players. They’ve done really well in terms of the players they’ve brought in, and Klopp is certainly at the forefront of that.”
