Klopp’s “prime candidate”: Liverpool on high alert to sign £231,000 per week monster

Liverpool have set their sights on signing Bayern Munich powerhouse Leon Goretzka to further bolster his midfield ranks.

Jurgen Klopp has already added two very talented players to his engine room, signing Alexis Mac Allister for £35M and Dominik Szoboszlai for £60M.

The two new signings are up there with the best midfielders to have played under the German manager and now a fresh report indicates he wants to add his compatriot, Goretzka, to his increasingly exciting midfield.

Leon Goretzka - Soon to be a Liverpool midfielder?

According to a Football Transfers exclusive, Liverpool have made signing Goretzka one of their priorities as the club plans for a future where Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and perhaps Thiago aren't playing at Anfield this season.

Klopp reportedly sees Goretzka as a "prime candidate" to take his new-look side to the next level.

Signing Romeo Lavia is reportedly the main priority, according to Fabrizio Romano, but with his price tag set at around €40M (£34.3M), this may be one of those opportunistic signings that Liverpool wait so patiently to materialise.

A lot can be said about FSG's frugality and the negligence shown in not acting with a more proactive mindset in regards to investing into the midfield over the last four transfer windows.

Yet, signings like Szoboszlai come about due to the club's composed approach in the transfer window.

Goretzka, whose £231,000 per week Bayern Munich contract expires in just three years, has been made available for transfer as Thomas Tuchel shakes his side up.

Where would Goretzka if he completed a move to Liverpool?

Last season, the powerful midfielder managed an impressive six goals and assists - more than any other Liverpool midfielder managed.

Significantly, he would add more height to the side with his 1.89m (6ft2) frame sure to pass the Premier League physicality test. The Reds are already one of the best set piece sides in Europe but with the German in their ranks, they would be even more intimidating.

He's not a natural defensive midfielder although he can play there but his best work comes in the no.8 role.

While Szoboszlai has more flair and the better shot, Goretzka is quite similar to the Hungarian in that he likes to drive through the centre of the pitch before playing a pass or having a shot from range.
