Liverpool would be making a huge mistake if they sold Joe Gomez, says Jose Enrique

Liverpool would be making a huge mistake if they allowed Joe Gomez to move to Tottenham this month amid reports that Ange Postecoglou wants to sign the English centre-back.

The 26-year-old has been vital for Jurgen Klopp this season as the German navigates another defensive injury crisis.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is the latest to succumb to an injury and joins Kostas Tsimikas, Andy Robertson and Joel Matip on the sidelines.

Gomez has played at right-back, centre-back and left-back this season. His versatility has been key to Liverpool's challenge on four fronts and without him, it's likely the 2023/24 season would not be as promising as it is right now.

Reports suggest Spurs want Joe Gomez

Spurs are struggling with their own injuries in defence and they are assessing all options to rectify the situation in the January transfer window.

According to the Daily Mail, Joe Gomez of a list of four defenders that Ange Postecoglou is considering which includes Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo , Bournemouth's Lloyd Kelly and Radu Dragusin from Genoa.

Speaking on Spurs' transfer plans, Postecoglou said: "Obviously if we can do business early it's great. Not just because of losing Romero, but there's a whole month there - why waste it?"

While the Australian would surely love a player like Gomez, it seems unlikely Liverpool would entertain the idea of losing another defender, this time permanently.

Jose Enrique says Liverpool must not sell Gomez 

Former Liverpool defender Jose Enrique says he doesn't think it would be wise to sell Gomez given the circumstances and his talent.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, the Spaniard said: "Joe Gomez going to Tottenham? If I was Liverpool I wouldn’t sell him.

"No chance I would sell Joe Gomez in the form he’s in right now, he’s getting fit, he can play right, left or centre-back. In the summer you never know what comes, but I don’t think it would be clever for Liverpool to sell Joe Gomez right now, not a chance mate."

Klopp says Gomez has never asked to leave the club

Not only would Liverpool be loathe to lose Gomez amid the injuries and potential for silverware this season, Jurgen Klopp also recently said Gomez has never asked to leave the club.

The boss said: "I think Joe is absolutely at home here so that is the no.1 reason (he is still here).

"He never came to my office and asked: 'Can I go?' No, never. It was always sorted before it could get to that point. We sorted a new contract, he wanted to sign and he wanted to stay.

"I think he and his wife really feel he is Liverpool through and through and so that is the reason more than anything else."
