“In the final few weeks of the window": Fabrizio Romano explains Liverpool transfer strategy

Fabrizio Romano has allayed supporters' fears as Liverpool head into the new Premier League season short of at least two new signings.

The club made the right call to release midfielders Alex-Oxlade-Chamberlain, James Milner and Naby Keita after their contracts expired at the end of last season.

They followed this up by impressing fans with quick-fire moves to sign Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai but more recent transfer activity is concerning.

Fabinho and Jordan Henderson were allowed to move to the Saudi Pro League after revealing their desire to move on from the Liverpool project.

These sales undermine the impact that Mac Allister and Szoboszlai could have this season. Liverpool's midfield is now weaker than last season despite the new arrivals.

To make matters worse, Liverpool are haggling with Southampton over Romeo Lavia and have had two bids rejected so far although that could develop quickly if the Reds find a breakthrough in talks with the Saints.

Fabrizio Romano reveals Liverpool transfer strategy

Speaking to the Born and Red YouTube channel, Romano has allayed fears over Liverpool's transfer window with the Premier League season set to kick off on Sunday.

Romano reports: “In the final few weeks of the window I expect Liverpool to sign for sure one player, at least two, could be three if they find a good opportunity.

“They’re really working on that. They’re having daily contacts. Their style is to go player-by-player and negotiation-by-negotiation because this is how Liverpool work.

“But I think they will be very busy in the final weeks.”

Liverpool need two more midfielders and a centre-back to complete their squad. Depth is vital if Jurgen Klopp and his players are to challenge for top honours this seasom.

As it is, the Reds will compete in the Europa League after failing to finish in the Premier League top four last season .
