Bayern Munich "Currently" Planning January Hijack Of £45M Liverpool Target

Bayern Munich are investigating a move to sign Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips ahead of Liverpool in the January transfer window.

Despite signing four midfielders in the summer, Jurgen Klopp needs to add a defensive midfielder to his squad and Philipps has emerged as a target.

The former Leeds United no.6 has struggled with injury since moving to the Etihad, missing 18 games since his £45 million transfer.

The latest Kalvin Phillips transfer news

An update from Bundesliga transfer expert Christian Falk claims that information made available to SPORT Bild suggest that Bayern Munich are assessing a move to sign Phillips.

The Bavarians missed out on signing Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha at the end of the summer transfer window are still looking for a player to fill the role.

Taking to Twitter, Falk reported: "According to our information, Kalvin Phillips (27) from Man City is one of the candidates who are currently being discussed at FC Bayern for the winter."

Liverpool signing Phillips from City would be surprising given their rivalry over the past few years.

The Premier League champions might have sold Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko to Arsenal but it seems difficult to see the same courtesy shown to the Merseysiders.

Fabinho has yet to be replaced after his move to the Saudi Pro League last season.

As a result, the Klopp's side still struggles maintain control during games which could threaten chances of challenging for the title this season.
