Shock Liverpool twist in Manchester City 115 charges case

Pep Guardiola

Liverpool are leading Manchester City in the Premier League title race this season but the two clubs are not only competing on the pitch this year. The two sides are standing firm against each other in the legal quagmire of the Premier League as well.

The Premier League and Manchester City are battling on the legal front of an independent panel as the governing body push to prove their 115 charges against the reigning champions.

The case is being heard behind closed doors and a decision is only expected towards the end of the season. Manchester City could face the threat of relegation from the Premier League if they are proven guilty.

However, there has been a twist in the legal proceedings as four Premier League clubs have submitted notice that reserve the right to claim compensation from Manchester City if they are found guilty of breaching the Premier League’s financial rules.

Alongside Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool acted within the six-year limit to notify their rivals of their intentions.

Ex-Premier League owner feels the clubs are well within their rights to serve those notices

Former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan has insisted that the four Premier League clubs have done the right thing and were within their rights to take the legal battle to Manchester City.

He feels if the Premier League champions are found guilty, the four teams would be in the right if they sue Manchester City for financial compensation.

Jordan stressed that Manchester City fans should have no reason to complain as the club would have done the same if another club were guilty of breaching financial rules.

“They’re just putting their position, they have to reserve the right to do it”, Jordan responded on talkSPORT.

“They’re not suggesting by doing this that they decrying the fact that City are innocent or condemning them as guilty – they’ve got their own views and can speak for themselves on that.

Can you name the team Liverpool sold these players to?

“If Man City are found guilty of these charges, these clubs will sue them. Absolutely. It’s allowed and facilitated by the rules that are now in place and I believe that they’ll take it up.”

The ex-Crystal Palace chief reaffirmed: “That doesn’t mean Man City are going to be found guilty and doesn’t mean there should be mean-spirited reaction from Man City fans because I can tell you if the boot was on the other foot, Man City would be doing it.

“They were the rules at the time and if Man City have broken them and then created outcomes that have prejudiced other people economically, then there has to be a consequence for it. It’s not ideal, not what you want, but it’s not surprising.”
