Serie A defender with Premier League ambition flirts with Liverpool

Liverpool emerged as an attractive destination for several players in Europe during the Jurgen Klopp era and they have continued to remain the same under new manager Arne Slot.

The new Liverpool boss’ start to life in the Premier League and the Champions League has removed all doubts about his ability to be the man for the job at Anfield.

Liverpool are sitting top of the league table after eight games and are well-placed to qualify for the knockout rounds of the Champions League this season.

The club are an attractive destination for players with ambition to compete for the top trophies and they are likely to be more aggressive in the transfer windows coming up after a lukewarm last summer.

The Merseyside giants are likely to be in the market for defenders next summer regardless of whether Virgil van Dijk stays or goes and are keeping tabs on several centre-backs.

It is unclear whether Liverpool are actually looking at him but Bologna centre-back Sam Beukema has revealed his ambition for a move to the Premier League in the near future.

‘I would be happy to join Liverpool’

The 25-year-old Dutch defender has been at Bologna since last year and played a big role in getting them to the Champions League last season.

The centre-back has proven himself in Serie A and admitted that he has the ambition of being in the Premier League.

He revealed growing up he was a West Ham fan and really enjoyed the atmosphere of their old stadium at Upton Park.

However, the Dutchman indicated bigger ambitions and claimed he wouldn’t say no if a club of Liverpool’s size want him to join them.

“I also have ambitions and hope one day to be able to play maybe in the Premier League or another big club”, the centre-back told Corriere dello Sport (via Sport Witness).

“I was a fan of West Ham. I once visited Upton Park with my father and I was really impressed because the atmosphere was similar to that of Feyenoord or Go Ahead Eagles.

“But there are so many fantastic teams in England, so if another great club like Liverpool came along I would be happy to go there one day.”
