Fabrizio Romano provides key contract update on 29-year-old Liverpool target

Fabrizio Romano

Liverpool are setting up plans and contingencies for the upcoming transfer windows as sporting director Richard Hughes plots to carry out an evolution of the Liverpool squad in tandem with Arne Slot.

Fans were less than happy about the way Liverpool went about their business in the summer and were largely underwhelmed by Hughes’ first transfer window since becoming the sporting director.

Liverpool want to be more aggressive in the winter window and plans are in place to bring in a new midfielder, which was the priority in the summer.

The Reds are keeping tabs on several players across Europe and while the focus is on young players, the club are open to signing more experienced players if they emerge as market opportunities.

Joshua Kimmich was one of the players Liverpool considered signing amidst his contract tussle with Bayern Munich in the summer but he eventually stayed in Bavaria.

The Merseyside giants are considering signing him next year on a free transfer but those hopes are about to go up in smoke.

Bayern Munich are optimistic about an agreement over a new deal with the Liverpool target

Kimmich’s current deal expires at the end of the season but there were claims that negotiations over a new deal broke down between the two camps.

However, talks are again underway and there is now an air of positivity between Bayern Munich and the player’s representatives.

Fabrizio Romano has claimed that the German giants are confident that a deal will be in place for Kimmich to sign a new contract with the club.

Paris Saint-Germain came close to signing him but the deal eventually fell through and the midfielder stayed put at the Allianz Arena.

Bayern Munich were never really keen to sell him and have been pushing to hold on to one of their most important players.

With negotiations happening between the two camps, the midfielder is now largely expected to sign a new contract with the club.

Liverpool are likely to miss out on the opportunity of picking up a player of Kimmich’s experience on a free transfer next summer.

The Reds themselves have their own contract situations to sort out with Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk in the final eight months of their current deal respectively.

Meanwhile, one of their young stars has also been linked with a move away which you can read about here.
