Report: Liverpool eyeing “big money” Championship prodigy

Liverpool are reportedly keeping a close eye on one of the most exciting young talents in English football, Sunderland midfielder Chris Rigg.

According to Give Me Sport, the Reds are joined by Chelsea and Manchester City in tracking the 17-year-old, who has also drawn interest from European giants Real Madrid.

Rigg has already made a significant impact at Sunderland, becoming their youngest-ever goalscorer when he netted in a Carabao Cup match against Crewe in August 2023. Just a month later, he scored on his league debut in a dominant 5-0 win over Southampton, cementing his status as one of the brightest prospects in the country.

Despite his youth, Rigg has accumulated 30 senior appearances for Sunderland, scoring three goals, an impressive feat for someone who only turned 17 in June 2024. His rapid rise has made him one of the most sought-after young players in English football, with top clubs from both the Premier League and abroad vying for his signature.

While Sunderland, currently leading the Championship, are understandably keen to hold onto their starlet, Rigg appears willing to take his time and assess his options before making a move.

The teenager’s patience may benefit the Black Cats in the short term, but it’s expected that when he does eventually leave, it will be for a substantial fee. Former England international Carlton Palmer has suggested that Rigg’s transfer could involve “big money,” reflecting his potential and the high demand for his services.

The buzz around Rigg’s talent has led many within English football to view him as having even greater potential than some of his positional peers, including Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton.

Should Liverpool secure his signing, the young midfielder could follow a developmental path similar to Harvey Elliott. Elliott joined Liverpool at a young age and, after a successful loan spell at Blackburn, has established himself as a valuable member of the senior squad.

While Rigg might not be expected to challenge for immediate first-team starts, Liverpool would likely nurture his talent and gradually integrate him into the squad. With his remarkable progress to date, Chris Rigg is certainly one to watch as he continues his journey in football.
