Reds star linked with return to Greece

Greek football expert Stephen Kountourou reports that there are “whispers” Kostas Tsimikas could be in line to return to his former club Olympiakos.

The left back made his first premier league appearance this season as a substitute, as he came on for Andrew Robertson against Ipswich Town.

Tsimikas joined Liverpool from Olympiakos in 2020, and has been a key part of the rotation for the team. Especially during the past year, when Andrew Robertson has been unable to play many games due to injury and fitness problems.

The 28-year old played for Olympiakos in 2015, and won the Greek Cup and the Super League.

What is the word on Kostas Tsimikas?

According to Kountourou on his X account, there have been links and rumours around from Greece.

“Hearing whispers of a potential return to Olympiakos for Kostas Tsimikas. The Greek international does not seem to be in Arne Slot’s plans at Liverpool & a loan back to his former club makes sense. He requires game time & Thrylos is looking for another left back”

So far there is nothing concrete on this reported interest, Olympiakos are yet to make a bid to sign Tsimikas at this moment.

Could Liverpool let Tsimikas go?

In the case where the rumour ends up being true and a bid does come in for Tsimikas, will Liverpool accept it?

The depth at left back is quite thin. Outside Robertson and Tsimikas, the only option that could possibly slot in is Joe Gomez – who is also the depth for right back and center back.

So it looks very unlikely the Reds would be willing to let the Greek international leave the club.

Liverpool are yet to sign a senior first team player in this window, despite Arne Slot saying the club would be active in the transfer window before the start of the new campaign:

“As a club like we are, we are always looking if we can strengthen the squad but it is not so easy to strengthen the squad, if you saw both games today.

“I said many times before I inherited a real strong team and if we can and if we think it is possible we will strengthen the squad but only if we can and only if we think it is possible.”

The club have been able to sell a few players; Fabio Carvalho departed to Brentford for around £27.5million, Bobby Clark just joined Red Bull Salzburg, and Sepp Van den Berg is on the verge of moving too.
