Liverpool left Paris with a shock win in the Champions League.
The reds were battered all through out the first half. Paris Saint-Germain looked threatening through the first 45 minutes. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andrew Robertson had a tough time keeping the French side’s wingers in check. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scored early in the game, but the goal was ruled out due to an offside.
Liverpool were lucky to go into half time with the scores level. The reds grew into the game in the second half when Arne Slot made some tweaks to the tactics. A long ball from Alisson late in the game found Darwin Nunez who beat Marquinhos in an aerial duel. The Uruguayan had the composure to control the ball and lay a pass to Harvey Elliot who slotted past the keeper. Slot’s substitutes combined to give Liverpool a crucial 1-0 win.

Before Wednesday night’s game, Liverpool suffered a huge blow as Cody Gakpo was not fit enough to start in Paris. The forward did not even make the squad for the Champions League game. Arne Slot had to do without Gakpo, who was one of the club’s better performers this season.
The consensus after the game was that Liverpool escaped with a win. It took some bold calls from Slot to change the game before full-time. Harvey Elliot came on for Mohamed Salah and scored the winner. After the game, the midfielder gave his thoughts on the win:
”PSG were creating many chances but obviously thanks to this man [Alisson] and the defence, it was a very solid game defensively and it was just down to me to put the opportunity away. Thankfully it went in.”
PSG were not happy with the result, the French side believed they should have won. Midfielder Vitinha promised that his side would win at Anfield in the second leg:
“It’s tough to play a game like this, against a team like this, with one goalscoring opportunity, only one shot.”
“We will show the team we are, we will show our character”, Vitinha said speaking to Canal+. “We’ll win there. With the match we played, the victory was more than deserved. Like at the start of the season, we had lots of opportunities, but we failed to score.”
Liverpool will host Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield in the second leg of their Champions League tie.
