Ibrahima Konate rubbishes penalty call

Ibrahima Konate had a brilliant performance in Liverpool’s win over PSG.

The reds recorded a shock 1-0 away from home in Paris. The game was a brutal one for Liverpool. Arne Slot’s side were pressured from the first minute of the game. Spectators would have pointed out that the reds were extremely lucky to go into the half time break with the scores level.

Liverpool’s defence had a very good performance as they kept the Ligue 1 side at bay for most of the game. Ibrahima Konate was a crucial part of the performance. Alisson, who won man of the match, says PSG are one of the most difficult teams Liverpool have played this season:

”I think it’s a really good team. We still have one more [game] to come. Hopefully we can keep the result for the second game and we can play a better game. We know that we have to improve for the game at home and if we go through we’re going to play other teams that are really tough as well.”

Liverpool won the game after 90 minutes. However early in the first half there was one controversial incident. In the 25th minute, Bradley Barcola and Ibrahima Konate were contesting for a long ball. Barcola seemed to have beaten Konate to the pass and had taken a touch before entering the box. Konate then seemed to shove the winger which disrupted him as he lost control of the ball. The referee waved play on, and the subsequent VAR check did not give the penalty.

Paris Saint-Germain were furious with the decision in real time. Their club officials even argued with the referees when going down the tunnel in the first half. After the game, when Ibrahima Konate was asked about the incident, he called it ”soft”:

“There was a VAR check. If there was a push, like you said, I would have been shown a red card. I’m telling you that there wasn’t a foul. It’s true that I am very strong but I don’t apply power, I just put my arm. If I had put a lot more power into it then we could talk about it… but it was soft from me,” he said to Canal Plus.

Liverpool will take a 1-0 lead into the second leg of their Champions League clash at Anfield in a week.
