Newcastle decision hands Liverpool cup final boost

It took two big wins for Liverpool to stretch their lead on top of the Premier League.

The reds completed the double over Manchester City in the league this season, as they won away at the Etihad. Goals from Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai in the first half were enough to shut down Pep Guardiola’s side. Liverpool saw out the rest of the game comfortably, limiting City to almost no threat.

Last week, the reds also recorded a 2-0 victory over Newcastle at Anfield. Before the game, the magpies had recorded impressive wins over Arsenal and Nottingham Forest. Goals from Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister saw Liverpool see out a controlled win midweek.

Arne Slot’s side were big winners during the week as they opened a 13-point gap over second placed Arsenal.

Liverpool are on course to challenge to win the treble this season. The reds have a comfortable lead in the league with over 10 games to go. And the team are still in the Champions League this season. Arne Slot’s side can lift their first trophy this season when they come up against Newcastle in the League Cup final in the next week. If Liverpool can repeat the result from last week, they will definitely be going home with the trophy at Wembley.

Newcastle crashed out of the FA Cup to Brighton on the weekend. The result was even worse when Anthony Gordon was sent off for violent conduct late in the game. The England international is now set to miss the League Cup final due to suspension.

In a shocking turn of events, the magpies refused to appeal the suspension. Now, Gordon will definitely sit out the game next week. Newcastle boss Eddie Howe mentioned that the club would review the incident after the match:

“In that moment, I don’t know quite what’s happened. But I need to review it properly before forming my opinion”. It looks like this caused the team not to appeal the suspension.

Reds have no excuse to lose this game

Come next weekend, Liverpool should lift their first trophy of the season. With Newcastle missing players due to injuries and suspension, the reds do not really have any excuse before the final. Arne Slot has done so well this season, and his first year deserves a trophy.
