Is VAR doomed to fail? Liverpool don't seem ready to quit

Liverpool are fighting to uncover the truth of the VAR scandal that denied Jurgen Klopp's side the opportunity to summit the Premier League table.

Seven games into the season and the Reds have already had their fair share of refereeing scandals with four Liverpool players shown a red card this season.

Prior to this season, the Anfield outfit registered four red cards in 168 games.

It's a record that defies logic as the side that has won the Fair Play award five seasons in a row, now bottoms the table based on the most bookings.

Is VAR doomed to fail in the Premier League?

A column from Stefan Beinkowski discusses the human aspect of VAR that will always yield errors given the capacity we all have to make mistakes.

"To err is human" is the opening phrase of Stefan's piece and while this will always be a feature of referees, the standard on show in the Premier League has been concerning for a number of years now.

Liverpool fans have been on the end of some truly baffling calls in their head to head battle for the title against Manchester City over the last few years.

City are an incredible football team and Pep Guardiola has managed to eek astonishing consistency from his players, resulting in memorable title races with Liverpool.

So the frustration to see the Sky Blues lose to 2-1 Wolves only to lose 2-1 to Spurs with several contentious decisions making it impossible for Liverpool to achieve a result.

The Reds have now dropped to fourth in the table although they have not lost ground in the title race in terms of points with the gap between leaders City and Liverpool still two points.

Stefan continues by saying that football is now on a "doomed quest to remove human error from the game."

If this is the case, it seems Liverpool are refusing to accept that football's destiny is already written.

Liverpool's statement and request for VAR audio to be revealed

In a story we covered earlier today, Liverpool have issued a statement expressing their dissatisfaction with the PGMOL's statement.

A report from the Telegraph also reveals that Liverpool want to listen to the VAR audio when Luis Diaz wrongfully had his goal disallowed after a breakdown in communication.

While Liverpool have been crticised for escalating the matter, it's in the best interests of all 20 Premier League teams to see poor officiating standards held accountable.

A lack of accountability has characterised Premier League era referees and it's a rot that has to stop.

With football reaching an unprecedented overall standard of quality among players and coaching staff, the current level among England's referees is a bottleneck holding the league back.

How can the Premier League limit human error to a minimum?

If human error is the obstacle in the way of the highest level of refereeing, the Premier League needs to accept use of more technology.

The decision was made to reject the use of automated offside technology which in the case of Luis Diaz's wrongfully disallowed goal, would make huge progress.

The image below shows how the system FIFA used in the Qatar World Cup in December and January.

According to the Daily Mail, the system which uses "AI technology tracking players' limbs" to judge when offside calls instantly.

Much like the use of goal-line technology to accurately track when the ball has fully crossed the line, decisions move into a territory where officials aren't required to make the call.

Many calls like bookings and handball cannot be decided by a computer currently but offside, which is one of the most common areas of controversy, would be improved.
