Report: Door could open for Liverpool to sign Kylian Mbappe for £144m

Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly evaluating the market for players that could replace Kylian Mbappe if he leaves and Harry Kane has been mentioned as an option.

The Spurs striker won the Premier League Golden Boot this season with 23 goals, one more than Mohamed Salah but he wants to leave in search of silverware having not won a single trophy despite being just over a month away from his 28th birthday.

Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Jesus and Aymeric Laporte 'among the names' reportedly being offered but Kane moving to PSG would reportedly open the door for Liverpool to sign Kylian Mbappe.

The French superstar has been rather quiet at the EUROs this summer but everyone is aware of his unbelievable quality after he scored an unbelievable 42 goals and provided 11 assists season.

Lionel Messi, arguably the greatest ever, scored 38 goals and got 14 assists this term and so for Mbappe to be getting comparable numbers is evidence of his generational talent and signing him would underline Liverpool's ambition.

That said, a deal to sign Mbappe would require astronomical finances and while Liverpool may have been biding their time in the market, saving funds for a deal of this type, there is virtually no chance that the Reds would pay the £144m Transfermarkt suggests would be required to sign him.

Anfield Central doesn't have any insider information on Liverpool's interest in the former AS Monaco forward but it doesn't take a genius to recognise that this is not the type of transfer that Jurgen Klopp would be able to pull off.

All that said, the fact that Mbappe is set to go into the 2021/22 Ligue 1 season without an extension to his PSG contract means that there is a very real chance that he could leave the club on a free transfer next summer.

This makes a move to the Premier League far more likely and it would cost a lot less as the Reds would obviously not have to pay PSG a transfer fee but they would still need to weigh up the cost and consequences of paying his wages.

He's currently earning in the region of €398,000/week which is already a lot higher than the likes of Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk make and given the nature of Klopp's wage structure, signing the PSG forward could affect the harmony within the club.
