Liverpool outbid European giants for £54M starboy

Liverpool had outbid one of Europe's biggest clubs in the summer for £54M rated wonder kid but the outcome was inevitable.

The Reds were linked with signing a midfielder all summer with multiple targets sourced and reported - with Jurgen Klopp setting the bar extremely high only trying for the highest quality players.

One of those was Barcelona's 18-year-old star boy Gavi, who has become one of the best young players in world football and is certainly the best in the world for his age.

The proposed deal was set around the time when the Spaniard was discussing a new deal and his future was, at least for a month or two, up in the air to a certain extent.

Liverpool tried to throw a spanner in the works for the Catalan giants but fell short to the inevitability that someone who had been at the club since 2015 would eventually take the reigns in the first team.

Details of proposed transfer

The Reds had moved for the talented youngster as they tried to turn his head while his contract negotiations tailed on. With the club going through a serious economic crisis at the time, it wasn't out of the question that a deal could have been done.

Liverpool made an offer for Gavi this summer and made a higher offer than Bayern Munich for the midfielder, but the 18-year-old’s future was always at Barcelona - this comes from Mundo Deportivo and Fabrizio Romano.

La Porteria claimed last week that Liverpool put in one offer that was four times higher than Barcelona’s however, he decided to put pen to paper on a huge deal worth £60k-a-week which expires in 2026.

Having already made 10 caps for his country and totalling 56 games in all competitions at club level - Gavi is rapidly becoming a key figure in the Barcelona side. Joined by Pedri, the prospect of those two dominating for years to come was surely something he was never going to pass up.

His stats for an 18-year-old are crazy; he ranks between the 90th-97th percentiles for pressures, progressive carries, progressive passes received, dribbles completed and touches in the attacking area.

There's a good chance he goes onto become a true star in world football for club and country which is exactly why Liverpool tried to so hard to secure his signiture.
