€100m price tag for lightning-quick Liverpool target shows they were right to not pursue

Liverpool deciding not to pursue Antony has proven to be one of their best transfer decision, considering Manchester United are linked with a €100m move for the winger.

The Reds have had a busy summer with big signings coming in and players leaving and in that time they've been linked to a whole host of players.

One of them was Antony from Ajax earlier in the window and now Manchester United may even be ready to drop an obscene amount of money on the winger. Who does their scouting?

It's certainly not Julian Ward, as Liverpool's business in recent years has steered well clear of 'big' names in the hope of finding stars with potential and turning them into big names - which is why the club did not move for Antony.

Antony for €100m?

The latest news has linked United with a big money move for Antony, according to certain reports.

Reports claim “Manchester United are preparing a new offer for Antony. It should be €100m including bonus — €80m + €20m and could be accepted.”

With cheaper options on the market, its almost baffling that United would entertain that amount of money for a forward who's never scored more than nine goals in the Eredivisie.

To put that into context, an 18/19-year-old Mason Mount on loan at Vitesse Arnhem bettered Antony's goal contributions from last season. You won't see any Liverpool fans complaining if United do sign Antony for that fee.

Former target for Liverpool

The Reds had been linked with Antony in the past, with the Brazilian winger turning heads with his highlight reel skills and goals.

According to Si.com, Liverpool were lining up a shock move for the winger and reports in Brazil even claimed the club had opened talks with the player.

According to Yahoo Esportes, Liverpool have held discussions with both Ajax and Antony’s agent over a potential deal this summer. The report claimed that Liverpool’s interest was ‘strong’ and a bid of £59m could have been enough to reach an agreement with Ajax.

Now with the current fee being talked about nearing €100m, it was certainly the right choice to steer clear.
