£7M former PL legend linked with move back to England - has 7G/A's in 8 games at club level

A former Liverpool and Premier League legend has been linked with a move back to England and to Liverpool with his contract due to run out at the end of October.

Liverpool's former striker Luis Suarez looks set to leave Nacional when the Uruguayan season finishes at the end of next month.

He will be heading to Qatar in what could be his final World Cup appearance in November, but it's unsure whether he will re-sign for another club so close to the tournament beginning.

Fans in England are hoping he can make a 'Diego Costa-like' return to the PL, as the 35-year-old has signed on at Wolves in the last few weeks and it's clear from social media that some Liverpool fans would love to see him back at Anfield.

Latest reports on Suarez

What makes it interesting is that Suarez will no doubt be a key figure for Uruguay once again, even at 35 years old. This could be his last WC and surely he'll want to be part of a team in the build-up to the tournament to ensure he stays sharp and match-fit.

His immediate focus is the two fixtures Uruguay have against Iran and Canada which stand as their final warm-up matches before the 22nd edition of the WC gets underway in late November.

However, the latest news comes from the president of Nacional Jose Fuentes, who confirmed Suarez will depart next month following a three-month stint at the Uruguayan club.

"When the Uruguayan Championship ends, Suarez will leave, that's how we arranged his deal," said Fuentes, as reported by ESPN.

"It's what we agreed and he made a huge effort to come here. I say this to avoid generating fan expectations. Suarez is leaving. We've asked him, and he answered the same thing as before."

Suarez, 35, left Atletico Madrid after the 2021/22 season to return to the club where he made his professional debut back in 2005. Despite his advanced age, he still managed to contribute four goals and three assists in just eight games. He even managed to score on his debut in classic Suarez fashion.

Would it be a good idea?

Liverpool fans were dazzled by Suarez for three years between 2011 and 2014 which saw him score 82 goals in 133 games for the Reds. If you ask a Liverpool fan who their favourite forward ever is, you can bet the former Barcelona star is a choice of many.

His career went from strength to strength at Barcelona, where he won the treble and achieved so much in his six years at the Catalan club. He was linked with a move to Aston Villa in the summer, and a move to Liverpool would certainly be nostalgic, but it would go completely against their transfer model.

If, for example, Roberto Firmino had left in the summer maybe Suarez could have filled in as a third-choice forward. But even that would be highly unlikely, given he isn't at the level he was and it would be nothing more than a stop-gap visit but an incredibly fun one I must add.
