£42.5m Premier League centre-back says "Today, the best defender for me is Virgil van Dijk"

Highly rated Tottenham centre-back, Cristian Romero, was recently interviewed by Sky Sports and the Argentinian had high praise for our very own Virgil van Dijk.

Romero told Sky Sports, “Today, the best defender for me is Virgil van Dijk, always, and Lisandro Martinez from Manchester United. For me, they are the best in the Premier League."

The aggressive Argentinian defender has been very impressive since signing in the Premier League for £42.5M. Former Liverpool defender, Jamie Carragher even named him as his signing of the season in May.

Carragher said, "There is something special about him. He isn't the biggest of defenders, but he is clever, he is switched on, he is cool on the ball. I think Tottenham have a real player there."

Previously linked with Liverpool in 2021

He is certainly an amazing talent and he even caught the eye of Jurgen Klopp before heading to North London.

According to Sky Italia in 2021, Romero was on our centre-back target list and had asked for more information on his contractual situation. However, no official bid was ever made.

Van Dijk's incredible impact

Virgil van Dijk has certainly made a name for himself as one of the greatest centre-backs over the past few years, and he's still regarded as one. He went a whole season without being dribbled past and had many young players looking up to him because of that.

Many footballing legends have also deemed van Dijk as one of the best, if not the best centre-back.

After Liverpool's UEFA Champions League semi-final win against Villareal, Michael Owen told BT Sport, "Virgil van Dijk is the best centre-back of all time. I've never seen anyone else like him."

Former Manchester United legend, Rio Ferdinand, replied right after and said "Virgil Van Dijk is the best centre-back on the planet right now."

Despite such high praise from footballing greats, many people still criticise him for not winning as many trophies as the likes of Rio Ferdinand, John Terry, and Tony Adams. He's just 31 years old now and still has a few years under his belt to win more trophies.
