Premier League set to fine Liverpool £25,000 despite referee controversy

Liverpool face a fine from the FA despite the controversy of Saturday's Premier League defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

Jurgen Klopp watched on from the sidelines as an absurd number of calls went against Liverpool with little consistency to match the discipline required from Ange Postecoglou's players.

At least seven major calls went against the Reds in London and after Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota were sent off for questionable red cards, the Mirror reports that Liverpool could be set for a fine as well.

Liverpool could receive £25,000 fine for multitude of bookings

In total, Liverpool received six bookings - two red cards and four yellow cards.

This means the Reds could receive a £25,000 fine and with the FA's history of sanctioning sides for receiving more than five bookings per game, it will be interesting to see if they take further action.

Jones was sent off after his foot slipped over the top of the ball and into a painful tackle on Yves Bissouma. A straight red card, the 22-year-old will receive a three-match ban.

Jota was also shown a red card in what was a mixture of insanity from the forward and poor refereeing.

In both instances, Jota made minimal contact with Spurs fullback Destiny Udogie.

I went into depth on the errors referee Simon Hooper and VAR made and noted that Jota was unfortunate but he should have known better than to dive into a challenge from behind 90 seconds after being booked.

If Liverpool are sanctioned further, it will be interesting to see how the club responds after requesting VAR audio to ascertain why Diaz had his goal disallowed.

Jurgen Klopp has never been more proud of his players

The truly scandalous nature of the official's performance is such that every word from the players and staff will have a huge effect on how this scandal unfolds.

And make no mistake, this is a scandal. Jones red card aside which was quite nasty even though it wasn't reckless, Liverpool are fully justified in their sense of outrage.

Speaking after the 2-1 defeat, Klopp revealed his immense sense of proud for the manner in which his side conducted itself in the face of extremely challenging circumstances.

"I was never more proud of the team than today", Klopp said on Saturday.

"I never saw a game like this with the most unfair circumstances, crazy decisions.

"We scored an own goal, that is really tough to take but I am really proud.

Speaking on the red cards, the German coach said he disagrees with both dismissals.

He continued: "The first red card, Curtis steps on the ball and goes over. Not a bad tackle. It looks different in slow motion. He steps full throttle on the ball and goes over the ball. That is unlucky.

"[For Jota] first yellow was not a yellow. Then he gets a second and to defend with nine players is tricky.

“The offside goal. That is not offside when you see it, they drew their lines wrong. The ball is between Mo's legs, they drew the line wrong and didn't judge the moment when Mo passed the ball right. It is so tough to deal with it."

All in all, Liverpool can at least be hopeful that they will not endure a performance from the officials like this again (at least not soon).

There is little hope among fans, journalists and pundits that there will be overarching improvement from the officials in the near future but the scrutiny they are facing so far this season needs to yield results otherwise there will be more controversy this season.
