TalkSPORT host Alan Brazil has suggested that Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders would stand a chance of landing the head-coach role if he wanted it.

Jurgen Klopp announced his decision to leave the club at the end of the season in late January.

His entire coaching staff will leave as well, including Lijnders.

The Dutchman wants to become a head coach and Alan Brazil reports that he's been told by sources close to him that Lijnders stands a chance of managing Liverpool.

He said: “His assistant. People tell me he’s got a little chance if he wants it.”

Liverpool are now beginning to run out of time to hire a replacement for Klopp with just 10 games remaining in the Premier League season after the monumental clash with Manchester City.

What are Pep Lijnders' plans after leaving Liverpool?

Since returning to the assistant coach role in 2018, Lijnders has played a critical role in the success Liverpool have achieved under Jurgen Klopp's management.

He initially left the club to become the first team coach of NEC Nijmegen but returned six months later.

At Anfield, he has won several trophies, including the Premier League and Champions League, but now his future lies away from Merseyside.

While Lijnders would no doubt stand a good chance of becoming the next Liverpool coach if he made a serious push for the job but he will leave at the end of the season to pursue his own future in management, according to the interview Klopp gave after his decision to leave was made public.

“Pep especially is ready – ready to manage a football team and he wants to do that as well, so that’s great, together with Vitor.

“If you change, change properly. And they are ready for the future and I’m really happy about that. The most influential guy in the last years definitely in this club was Pep Lijnders. The job he did is absolutely exceptional. The inspiration he is for me is absolutely exceptional.

“The relationship we grew is absolutely exceptional. Outstanding, everything. And I’m really looking forward to follow his way and to support if necessary. And if I can, I will definitely do.”

I'm sure I speak for most Liverpool fans when I say we wish Pep nothing but the best in his coaching career. YNWA.
