Liverpool can still 'bridge the gap to Man City' claims Carragher

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has claimed that his former side can bridge the gap between themselves and Manchester City despite a poor start.

The Reds sit in eighth place following a poor start to the season that's seen them fall eight points behind Manchester City and nine points behind leaders Arsenal.

We know they can put together a strong run of form if they get momentum behind them - they won 16 out of the last 18 games in the league to push City all the way to the final game of the season.

Carragher claims Liverpool need to spring into life if they are to catch City and it's certainly something a Jurgen Klopp team is capable of.

"I think Liverpool need to get up to speed, in terms of being the title challengers to Manchester City, they're just a little bit off where they'd want to be." Carragher was speaking to Sky Sports at the Football for Change night in Manchester.

"Of course yeah, it's only six weeks ago since the season started and last year Liverpool were two games away from doing something that's never been done in the history of the game in our country. So close to winning four trophies.

"There's been a slight change in terms of new players coming in and a few players moving on but that's natural for a club the size of Liverpool.

"There's certainly a bit of a gap between them and Man City but they bridged that gap last season and certainly from my point of view I hope they can do it again."

They face a spell of 13 games in 43 days from October first, which makes it a key period for the club before the break for the World Cup.
