6 Things You Need To Know Ahead of Wolves vs Liverpool

6 Things You Need To Know Ahead of Wolves vs Liverpool

Liverpool are back in Premier League action this weekend with Wolverhampton Wanderers their first opponent following the international break.

The Reds head into the fixture third in the table after an unbeaten start to the season and will be aiming to extend that run.

Wolves, on the other hand, have already lost three games picking up three points just once so far when they beat Everton with an 87th minute winner.

Without further ado, let's jump into the six things you need to know ahead of kickoff at lunchtime.

1. Will Ryan Gravenberch play against Wolves?

In his pre-match press conference, Klopp revealed that Ryan Gravenberch is in contention to make his Liverpool debut against Wolves.

Since signing from Bayern Munich, the Dutchman has yet to make an appearance after missing the 3-0 win over Aston Villa because he had not yet been registered.

Now, with all the technicalities dealt with, Liverpool can play him in the Premier League.

When asked if the 22-year-old will feature on Saturday, Klopp said: “We will see that, but of course, there’s a benefit [of staying at Kirkby instead of meeting up with the Netherlands U21s]."

Gravenberch chose to remain on Merseyside instead of reporting for international duty with the Holland U21 side.

“He had training sessions here, he could sort everything on a private basis. We have games every three days, let me say it like that, so knows where he will live, he has organised everything around him.

“I understand the Dutch were not happy, I can get that, but the boy is a footballer through and through. He wants to play football all the time and used the break to fix a lot of things we usually do in a proper rush.

“So we didn’t have to do that, which for us, was good.”

2. Jurgen Klopp delivers injury update

Jurgen Klopp spoke to the press on Friday, providing an injury update ahead of the trip to Wolves.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is a confirmed absentee, Klopp said, telling the gathered reporters: [There is] no concern. He is not available, we knew that before.

“He didn’t train with the team once yet and will take a little bit. It is not the worst hamstring injury you can have but it’s a hamstring injury and they barely heal in two weeks - and this one didn’t, either.

“As he is running already, we hope he can start ball work early next week and then we will see and go from there.”

On who else will miss out, Klopp added: “Thiago is running, but that’s it. Ibou trained for two days with the team.

“[Darwin Nunez] I didn’t see him yet, but we obviously had contact and he said it was fine, but we will see that now and make a couple of decisions there. Darwin should be fine.

“[Jarell Quansah] trained the full week with us, so it was obviously then enough time to rest. Stefan [Bajcetic] had a good camp with the [Spain] U21s, played only a few minutes but [it] helped him anyway. I think that’s it.”

3. A win over Wolves will temporarily make Liverpool Premier League leaders

Just five games into the Premier League season, Liverpool can make their first appearance at the top of the table.

With Jurgen Klopp's side set to play the first match of the weekend, they could climb above Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City to take first place until they play their own matches.

Spurs face Sheffield United while Man City will take on West Ham.

4. Liverpool have longest current unbeaten record

Liverpool are on the longest current unbeaten run in the Premier League with 15 games without defeat. Their last league defeat came in March 2023 when they were beaten 1-0 by Bournemouth.

This season, they are on a four game unbeaten streak with one draw and three wins to mark the start of the new Premier League campaign.

The attacking football on show has some excited about Liverpool's chances of winning while some are still concerned about defensive phases of play.

5. Liverpool red card tally put into perspective

Alexis Mac Allister was sent off against Bournemouth and Virgil van Dijk was shown a red card against Newcastle United.

So far this season, the Reds have two Premier League red cards. This is happened for the first time since 2015/16 when three Liverpool players were sent off.

While they have been unlucky so far, Klopp will likely have warned his players to ensure it's not a habit that derails the good progress so far.

Mac Allister did not receive a suspension after Liverpool appealed the decision but that good fortune was countered when van Dijk was fined and suspended for his reaction to being sent off against Newcastle.

He received a four match ban and a fine of £100,000 fine and will not be available to face Wolves on Saturday.

6. Origi winner the latest Liverpool goal vs Wolves ever

In December 2021, Liverpool were set to play out a 0-0 draw with Wolves before Origi popped up in stoppage time to once again rescue his teammates.

The Belgian will forever go down in Liverpool folklore for his knack for scoring important goals at important times.

Salah burst into the box with an incredible touch to control Virgil van Dijk's 50-yard pass before he played the ball to Origi.

With one touch and a swivel, the striker had Wolves exactly where he wanted them as he found the back of the net in the 94th minute to hand Liverpool three points.
