Liverpool grow closer to landing a top target.
Arne Slot has done a great job with the current Liverpool squad this season. The former Feyenoord coach has gotten the best out of the current set of players he inherited from Jurgen Klopp. Liverpool have had a great season and could end their campaign with a treble. Slot has the reds sitting top of the Premier League with a 13-point lead, and they face Newcastle in the League Cup final next weekend.

Liverpool will be in the market for a new striker ahead of this summer. Arne Slot has not been a fan of Darwin Nunez since he took over. The Dutch coach has preferred to play Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz as the number nine in attack. So it makes a lot of sense that Liverpool are targeting a striker in the upcoming window.
Reports earlier this week claimed that the reds are in contact with Alexander Isak. Liverpool will hope to make progress in talks with his representatives ahead of a possible summer move. The reds have been handed an even bigger boost this week. Christian Falk has confirmed that Newcastle have joined the race to sign Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike. The Frenchman will be available for around €80million. The Magpies see him as a perfect replacement in the event Alexander Isak leaves.
Speaking of Isak, Newcastle Chief Executive Darren Eales is adamant that the striker will not be sold this summer:
“We have no intention at all of those players being moved on. We’re not under the gun or anything like that,” Eales said.
“As you know, we’ve got an ownership that is ambitious and wants the best for the club. So from that perspective, it would be crazy for us to consider it.”
“He [Isak] has multi years left [on his Newcastle contract] so as with all of these things, we will have the discussions in terms of a new deal just like we did with Joelinton, Bruno [Guimaraes], or Anthony Gordon. That’s something that we will approach in the summer,”
Reds still have a chance
No matter Newcastle’s stance on Alexander Isak’s future, the decision will be down to the player. Isak has made it clear that he wants to play Champions League football next season. If the Magpies want to keep him at St. James’ Park, then their task is simple. Liverpool have all the cards in this deal, and could end up with one of the best strikers in Europe this summer.
