£72 million rated Liverpool star sums up the poor start to the season

9 points from a possible 18. 2 wins, 3 draws and a loss.

This is the situation Liverpool find themselves in after 6 league matches.

A sloppy and lethargic beginning to the 2022/23 season has been largely typified by one player.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has been extremely poor and a long way off his incredibly high standards he has previously set himself.

One good performance from six games is simply not good enough from the 23 year old.

Despite scoring a wonderful long range goal against Bournemouth a week ago, the England international has looked slow and too laid back throughout each game.

When things are going well and everything is free-flowing, the laid back nature of Trent comes across as calm and nonchalant.

However, the Reds are struggling in all areas of the game and thus, everything comes across as lazy.

A lack of stability in the team in general and the poor form of players around him is doing Alexander-Arnold no favours to be completely fair.

In past years the talented defender would be picking out attackers in the opposition’s box for fun.

But with no consistency in the striker position, each game has been different in terms of where the attacking player will pop up.

Against Everton, Darwin Núñez was playing a lot more on the shoulder of the back line and looking to get in behind while also drifting to the left at times.

This is a big switch up from the previous 3 games where Roberto Firmino was playing as much more of a false 9.

Dropping deep and looking for shorter passes into feet from the full backs rather than looking to stretch the game requires Alexander-Arnold to play a different game.

Players coming short and giving an easier option could be a solution to his seeming lack of confidence.

He almost comes across as trying too hard to pick the perfect pass and maybe just needs to get back to basics to re-gain confidence.

The games featuring Firmino have been slightly better for the right back as I feel he hasn’t quite got used to the movement of Núñez yet.

No doubt this will come with time and more experience of being in the same team as each other but hopefully it doesn’t take too long or the season could suffer.

A reason for the body language and effort being put in could be down to a lack of competition for a starting place.

New signing Calvin Ramsay has been out injured all season and a 36 year old James Milner cannot start games in this position consistently.

All Reds fans will be hoping Trent can rediscover his excellent form sooner rather than later as he could be the key to success for Jurgen Klopp in a stuttering season thus far.
