20 year old star shows Jurgen Klopp just why he must start the Merseyside derby

A fiery and edgy night at Anfield largely frustrated fans of the club.

Newcastle were the visitors and they rocked up to make an impact and they certainly did that.

Taking the lead through a well-taken but defensively poor goal by new signing Isak, all signs pointed towards an upset.

Clear-cut chances proved to be very hard to come by on the evening with the talismanic Mohamed Salah struggling to find his feet.

In Liverpool’s hour of need, who would be the hero, the saviour needed?

Step up, Fabio Carvalho.

How Carvalho changed the game for the Reds

Having dragged themselves back into the match with a clinical Roberto Firmino finish, Liverpool would not be happy with a point.

Home matches are a must-win under the circumstances and due to the already poor start to the season.

Jurgen Klopp rolled the dice as he withdrew his usually reliable full-backs and his captain at the same time.

The obvious call, which all fans watching in the stadium and at home will have seen, was the introduction of Fabio Carvalho.

Possession was absolutely dominated by the home side but there was a lack of dynamism in the middle of the park.

Everything seemed a bit too predictable and slow with Henderson and Fabinho on the ball a lot of the time.

Harvey Elliott tried his best and was head and shoulders better than any other player on the field through the whole game.

The system that has been effective and efficient over the years started to work in a more fluid way with Carvalho not afraid to run beyond Firmino as he dropped deep.

Linking up with Luis Díaz on the left-hand side of the pitch, that was the threatening side for Liverpool.

Driving at defenders and looking to get in behind only added to passing options and made the opposition think more.

The crowning moment for the recently turned 20-year-old was a sensational volley in the very last minute.

The Magpies will rue the constant time-wasting antics throughout the night when the ball broke loose to the Portugal international.

With his back to goal, Carvalho turned quickly to strike a deadly first-time effort to break travelling Geordie hearts.

Why Jurgen Klopp now has a selection headache heading into the derby

The sheer joy and passion displayed in Carvalho’s celebrations show just how hungry the young man is.

Questions will now be asked about whether he now earns a start in this weekend’s game at Goodison Park.

The only issue that may prevent this hope from becoming a reality is, who drops out of the team?

Based on performances in recent games, Harvey Elliott must start as he has been Liverpool’s player of the season so far.

Fabinho has been inconsistent but brings the most protection to the back line and, in truth, has been slightly better than option three.

Jordan Henderson has been badly out of form all season and it is clear that he needs a few games out of the side.

Admittedly playing on the wrong side of midfield in Thiago’s absence, the skipper has looked leggy and out of ideas when on the ball.

Carvalho has shown hunger and desire to track back and press the opposition but the question begs, would this midfield be too open?

Carvalho, Elliott and Fabinho may not provide the most defensive stability but the Reds will expect to dominate possession against Everton and thus, will need as many goal scorers on the pitch as possible.

Will Jurgen Klopp reward Carvalho for his match-winning performance or will the weekend be too soon for the future star?
