Liverpool took one step towards the treble on Sunday.
The went to the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, after Arsenal dropped points to West Ham on Saturday. The Gunners lost by one goal at home, giving the reds a chance to increase their lead. Arsenal failed to capitalize on Liverpool’s draw with Aston Villa midweek.
Arne Slot’s side ended the game early in the first half. Goals from Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai were enough to seal the game. Liverpool had a 2-0 lead after 37 minutes and saw out the rest of the game quite comfortably. The reds are now 11 points clear at the top of the Premier League.
Liverpool have been drawn against Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16 of the Champions League. Slot can lift his first trophy of the season in over two weeks when the reds face Newcastle in the League Cup final.

Manchester City make move for Liverpool target
Sunday was an interesting sight for fans at the Etihad Stadium. Mohamed Salah scored his 25th goal of the season, and set up Szoboszlai in the same game. Salah took one step closer to breaking the Premier League’s single season assists record. On the other side of the pitch, Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne looked past his best. The 33-year old lasted just 66 minutes, and failed to threaten Liverpool within that time.
Since the weekend, City have lined up a replacement for De Bruyne. Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz is a priority for the Premier League holders this summer according to the Daily Mail. City could snap up Wirtz from Liverpool, who have been linked with the German playmaker since last summer. Bayer Leverkusen are expected to charge a hefty fee for the 21-year old. Reports claim Wirtz’s transfer fee is in excess of £100million.
Reds do not really need Wirtz
Even though a player of the quality of Wirtz would start for any team, he is not really needed at Anfield. Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominic Szoboszlai have shown their quality. Liverpool would be better off focusing their resources on other areas of the squad. Unless one of Curtis Jones, or Harvey Elliot departs, there is really no need to sign another attacking midfielder.
In other news, Real Madrid have confirmed that they have no interest in signing Virgil Van Dijk. The Liverpool captain is set to leave Anfield at the end of the season.
