Liverpool to make £45m offer for Newcastle centre-back in January

Sven Botman Liverpool

Newcastle United defender Sven Botman is the latest name to be linked with a move to Liverpool recently. The Reds have not been getting the best of results in the last month of football.

Arne Slot’s side have been uncharacteristically sloppy this season, and some would argue that the technical team knew this. The Reds tried to sign Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi in the summer, but the Eagles held their ground.

Liverpool did sign Italian youngster Giovanni Leoni from Parma, but unfortunately the player suffered a season-ending injury after his first game.

The club will need to pay a premium fee to sign the 25-year old Dutchman, who has been attracting attention since his move to Newcastle over the last few years.

Liverpool see Sven Botman as Marc Guehi alternative

As already mentioned earlier, Liverpool pushed to sign Marc Guehi before deadline day. The England international has one-year left on his deal at Selhurst Park and could leave as a free agent next summer.

But since the season started, the noise around a possible Guehi move has died down. Reports claim that it would be very unlikely that the defender ends up at Anfield in the next few months.

Marc Guehi vs Sven Botman Defensive Stats in Premier League 2025/26
Statistic Marc Guehi Sven Botman
Games Played 10 8
Minutes Played 900 555

Sven Botman now seems to be the priority for the Reds, who know that signing the Dutchman will not be easy. The 25-year old has been one of Newcastle’s best performers since he joined in 2022.

Is a move to Anfield possible?

Signs strongly point to the fact that a move to Liverpool can be possible for Sven Botman. Newcastle’s future looks a bit unclear after the mess of a summer transfer window they had.

Eddie Howe missed out on his top targets, who all chose to join bigger clubs. Reports indicate that Newcastle are ‘desperate’ to give the defender a new contract, but the player has yet to put pen to paper.

The allure of playing for Liverpool alongside fellow Dutchman Virgil van Dijk and Ryan Gravenberch is an attractive prospect for Botman. With 18 months left on his current deal, and the defender not yet willing to commit, a deal could be struck.

If the Reds were to offer a fee around the rumoured £45 million, Newcastle could be swayed. Manager Arne Slot is also believed to know countryman Botman, having come up against him during their days in the Netherlands.

The Magpies spent big this past summer, and could need the funds to balance their books. Eddie Howe’s side have been near the red line when it comes to PSR in recent seasons.
