Liverpool made some big transfers in the summer, but it looks like not all of them have paid off this season. After a decent start to the campaign, Arne Slot’s side have taken a massive nosedive.
This season, the Reds have already lost seven games in all competitions, including five in the Premier League. Slot only lost four league games the whole of last season’s title-winning campaign. And even though the results have not gone their way, the club board are fine with keeping the Dutchman in charge. But talks over a potential new deal have been stalled according to sources.
With the January window coming up, it is not likely that the Reds will add to their £449 million spending spree this past summer, but some exits could be expected.
Liverpool players set to leave on free transfers this summer
January also presents Liverpool with their last opportunities to cash in on some players. Arne Slot wants to build a squad to fit his style of football, and it is clear some players will not be at Anfield to play a part. Some Liverpool stars are also in the last few months of their contracts, and in the January window, they can begin talks with foreign clubs over potential summer deals.
Sky Sports have released a list of every player in the Premier League who will be soon available to agree a contract with another club outside England. Here are some set to leave Liverpool for free.
Rhys Williams
The young center back has not had many games under his belt since breaking out in the 2020/21 season. Williams has spent last season out on loan and has failed to play this season.
Freddie Woodman
Another youngster who is down the pecking order at Anfield. He played in the EFL Cup exit to Crystal Palace, but is not likely to feature anymore this season. Liverpool are well stocked in the goalkeeping department.
Andrew Robertson
The veteran fullback has still managed to play a part in the first team this season. Arne Slot seems to trust him, and he is a huge presence in the dressing room for the team. Liverpool are happy to have him around.
Ibrahima Konate
The French defender has delayed a new deal for as long as possible. He has been linked with possible moves to Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid over the last year. He remains a key player in the starting lineup.
| Player | Games Played | Goal Contributions | Win Rate | Clean Sheets |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Andrew Robertson | 12 | 2 | 66.66% | 1 |
| Milos Kerkez | 16 | 1 | 56.25% | 1 |
Liverpool’s officials really have to get to work on tying down Andrew Robertson and Ibrahima Konate ahead of this summer. The duo have been a big part of the club’s rotation in defence. The Reds brought in the younger more dynamic Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth, but his performances so far have been mixed, with some disastrous displays over the last month. Robertson has provided more stability than Kerkez anytime he steps in the lineup, showing that he can be a good rotation player for the next season at least.
| Player | Games Played | Minutes |
|---|---|---|
| Virgil van Dijk | 87 | 8,509 |
| Ibrahima Konate | 79 | 5,976 |
Ibrahima Konate cannot allowed to leave for free; Liverpool must understand that he is a very valuable asset. They must do everything possible to keep the defender. He will be the cornerstone of this team when Van Dijk eventually leaves, and at Konate’s age, there are not many better defenders in Europe. Liverpool must tie him down long-term.
